Anthony Joseph new single.

Joseph employs a syncretic, diasporic and highly innovative blend of genres and styles, providing an example of how diaspora becomes subject, inspiration and rationale for the innovative use of form, while experimental traditions enable him to show the diaspora in a fresh light.

Christopher Rees, a MikeE's advice for the weekend.

Christopher Rees was Eli's support act in London (with the brass section this time!) . Here is a stripped back version of his song sparks flying from his excellent heart on fire lp. Mike had a very brief word with him after the gig and he seemed a really nice genuine guy.

New Christopher LP:

Christopher Rees (with the South Austin Horns) has made a wonderful transatlantic collaboration that sparks and smoulders with warmth and soul.
Bob Harris (Radio2) says "I love this record. I think it’s absolutely terrific", Uncut have given it a 4* review, as have Mojo magazine. His best work to date! (Spiller records review).

Rediscovering Andre Williams

"Look man, I'm not a liberator, I am an entertainer!"

Joss Hutton, Philippe Korpar-Migrenne and Ski Williams chewed the "Bacon Fat" with one of R&B's wildest, Andre "Mr Rhythm" Willliams. Over the past forty years, Bessamer, Alabama-born Andre Williams has written, recorded and produced some of the most ribald ("Humpin', Bumpin' & Thumpin'"), infectious ("Rib Tips") and downright bizarre ("Please Pass The Biscuits") R&B ever committed to vinyl. Andre kicked off his career with a 1956 US top ten hit, the funky "Bacon Fat", but sadly, despite a slew of gloriously salacious follow-ups - including "Jailbait " and "The Greasy Chicken" - failed to capitalise on his initial success. However, in 1961 a timely haircut saw him cross paths with the then struggling founder of Motown records, Berry Gordy for whom he produced the likes of The Contours and Mary Wells.

Following his refusal to be married-off into the Gordy clan, Andre spent the late 1960's writing, producing and performing for Chicago's Chess and Houston's Duke / Peacock labels, who released such proto-funk classics as his own "Cadillac Jack" and "The Stroke" plus such wonderful discs as "Uhuru (African Twist)" by Jomo, Jeanette William's "Hound Dog", Bobby Bland's "Spotlighting The Man" album and The Meditation Singer's "Change Is Gonna Come" set. Sadly, in the early 70's, Andre's heady lifestyle took a turn for the worst after he was asked to produce Ike Turner. The upshot of Andre's chemical-fuelled association with 'ole Ike was a heavy coke problem that led to a hand to mouth existence for most of the 1980's, during which time Andre even spent a spell begging on a bridge in Chicago.

Happily, Andre is once again the epitome of health, a recent court case has seen him finally awarded royalties from his most popular composition "Shake A Tail Feather" - a 1963 hit for The Five Du-Tones, memorably featured in the films "Hairspray" and "The Blues Brothers" - and he is currently once again electrifying crowds around the world, thanks to the acclaim garnered by such staggeringly sleazy albums as "Silky", "Red Dirt" and "The Black Godfather." However, as the man himself says "You keep jumpin' up to the dick! Let me give you guys a methodical interview, chronological, OK?" Well, you got it Andre... To be continued here

Williams lived in a housing project with his mother until she died when he was six years of age. A sly and smart young boy, his "aunties" raised him until he was around 16. He then set out on his own and moved to Detroit, Michigan. There, he became friends with Jack and Devora Brown, owners of Fortune Records which was located at the back of a barber shop. Williams would become labels mates with fellow Fortune Records stars Nolan Strong and Nathaniel Mayer.

He then became lead singer for The 5 Dollars in 1955, which already had a contract with Fortune Records. Though most of the songs were billed as 'Andre Williams and the Don Juans' (on Epic in 1956 billed as 'Andre Mr Rhythm Williams and his New Group'), "Bacon Fat" and "Jail Bait" were solo efforts. "Bacon Fat" hit #9 on the Billboard R&B Charts in 1957. "Bacon Fat" (written by Williams) was such a success that Fortune Records sold the song to Epic Records, a much larger distributor (released as Epic 5-9196 "Bacon Fat/Just because of a Kiss"). Since "Bacon Fat" and "Jail Bait" were such successes, Williams figured that "talking instead of singing" was a better idea for him, for he didn't have as good a voice as some other singers from the 1950s. In 1960 Fortune released a complete LP, of all of his singles with the Don Juans, which was titled Jail Bait (rereleased in 1986). This was just the start of Williams' nationwide fame.

The Laynes new Single is available.

The Laynes were formed in the spring of 2006 and have quickly become a force to be reckoned with. Their live act is an energetic explosion of guitar driven harmonies mixed with beat, psychedelia and mod rhythm and blues which produces a raw, yet melodic sound influenced by only the best bands of the 60s. Their debut album It's For You was released in November 2009 on Two Cat Records.

The much awaited new single, We Got Time is a Kinks style rave up with a Nazz influenced harmony driven chorus, some chinking piano and a piercing guitar solo. The b side Wasn't It You is a cover of the classic King/Goffin track famously covered by the Ultimate mod band - The Action.

Jim Capaldi Boxset "A true forgotten hero" according to Paul Weller.

CD Description

Jim Capaldi’s story is one of the last great unexplored tales in popular music. The co-founder, drummer, vocalist and lyricist of Traffic, Capaldi was a five time winner of BMI and ASCAP awards for most played compositions in America. His work in Traffic, alongside Steve Winwood & Chris Wood, fuelled a 10 album multi-platinum career and in 2004, Traffic were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

But Traffic, although hugely significant, is only part of the story. Jim Capaldi also enjoyed over a thirty year solo career and worked with many other artists. Dear Mr Fantasy tells his story through 67 hand-selected tracks, many rare and previously unreleased. It provides a four-CD overview of the enigmatic vocalist and drummer. Packed with rare photos and essays from writers Andrew Male and Pierre Perrone, it follows his tale from the beat group The Hellions in 1963 through the formation of Traffic and its many incarnations. It features material from his time as a successful solo artist on Island, Polydor, Carerre and Atlantic Records throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Capaldi also recorded with many rock greats--from Eric Clapton, to Steve Winwood and George Harrison, and from Carlos Santana to Van Morrison and this work is included on Dear Mr Fantasy. Yet Capaldi’s tale, like many of his recordings, is hidden. Few know, for instance, that he wrote the lyrics to "Love Will Keep Us Alive", the only outside song on The Eagles’ Hell Freezes Over comeback release, or the lyrics for the Reggae anthem "This is Reggae Music".

This set, overseen by Aninha Capaldi is a musical journey like no other. From the streets of the West Midlands to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, Dear Mr Fantasy is a remarkable overview of a remarkable man. It including home demos, the unreleased track "Love’s Got A Hold On Me" recorded with George Harrison, and an unreleased 2004 Traffic recording of "Dear Mr Fantasy".

Mari Wilson and pledge music! (Ian S)

Guess What? Great news…

I’m back with an exciting new album & you can get it first, along with tons of new, rare and signed items & VIP access.

I’ve been playing around with ideas and choosing some of my favourite songs – I’ve never made an album of covers before and thought it was about time, especially as I perform some of these songs in my show and I know a lot of you would like me to record them.

I’m collaborating with the masterful Simon Hale whose CV reads like a who’s who of the great and the good. We’re so pleased with the material – this album will be a lot of fun, not only to record, but to promote too. Well, soon it will be finished and it’s almost time to unveil the album to you, my ever supportive fans.

The new album will include some of the cover versions of songs that I’ve performed at my live shows in recent years. The album is a surprising and diverse mix of both classics and contemporary songs, from the likes of the Bee Gees and The Pretenders to Gillian Welch – they’ll all be given the Mari Wilson treatment… and finally, having played Dusty Springfield in Dusty The Musical, at last a Dusty song,

And there’s even more exciting news than that. I’ve made very some very special arrangements to release the album to you in a new and innovative way. Working with PledgeMusic we can send you the album direct, without having to worry about album release dates. You’ll get it first, as soon as it’s ready. You’ll also have the opportunity to ‘pledge’ on a range of rare, signed, limited editions and previously unreleased items all direct from me to you.

No matter what you chose to pledge for, you’ll be rewarded with a free download of the new album automatically, as soon as it’s ready.

There’s signed CDs of the new album, handwritten lyrics, exclusive show tickets and a Mari Wilson rarities CD. I’ve even been up in the attic and can offer you the chance to get your hands on some very rare and exclusive Mari Wilson memorabilia – you wouldn’t believe what I had stashed up there.

By pledging on these items, you’ll also gain access to my exclusive PledgeMusic “Updates Page” where we’ll upload tons of new media, video diaries, photos, blogs and demos, all of which will keep you right up to date on the album and it’s release.

As if this wasn’t enough reason to get involved, a percentage of the proceeds from this album will also go to my chosen charity – the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. So please do get involved.

Hopefully you’ll love the album. We’re very pleased to be bringing it to you in this very special way.

Many thanks and best wishes

Mari x
